OUR STORY

Honouring our Heritage, Crafting our Future

There’s a long-told tale that the Wonthaggi Workmen’s Club was born around a barrel — when a group of thirsty miners decided to solve the problem of finding a legal drink in town.

While there may be some poetic truth in that story, the real foundation of our Club runs much deeper.
In 1910, as the Victorian Government sought to manage alcohol consumption in the newly established State Model mining town, a social experiment began. Clubs were encouraged as places where working men could gather, socialise and conduct themselves in a civilised and respectful environment.
Many clubs were formed. Few endured. More than a century later, we are proud to still stand at the heart of Wonthaggi.

From Workmen’s Club to Wonthaggi Workers Club

Founded in 1911 as the Wonthaggi Workmen’s Co-Operative Club, our organisation was inspired by the United Kingdom’s Workmen’s Club movement — institutions designed not just for social connection, but for opportunity, equality and self-improvement.

From the beginning, the Club was:

  • Open in membership
  • Politically and religiously neutral
  • Democratically governed
  • Built on respect and inclusion
  • Over time, our name evolved to reflect both progress and inclusivity.

Today, as Wonthaggi Workers Club, we honour our heritage while embracing a modern identity that represents our entire community — not just where we came from, but who we are now.

Resilience & Growth

Our journey mirrors the strength of Wonthaggi itself.

We have endured and adapted through:

  • The fire of 1922 (rebuilt in 1923)
  • The closure of the State Coal Mine
  • Legislative and social change
  • Generational shifts in community life

The Club expanded through the decades — with major developments in the 1990s, the creation of large dining and function spaces, and architectural features that pay tribute to our mining heritage.
In 2008, a larger children’s play area was introduced, reflecting the growing number of families choosing the Club as their meeting place.

The addition of a 26-suite motel marked a significant milestone — positioning the Club as a destination for visitors to the Bass Coast region as well as a hub for locals.

Community at Our Core

While our facilities have grown, our purpose remains clear.

Wonthaggi Workers Club exists to:

  • Support local clubs and community groups
  • Provide welcoming spaces for connection
  • Host events, celebrations and milestones
  • Create local employment opportunities
  • Give back through community initiatives

For more than 100 years, the Club has been woven into the social fabric of Wonthaggi. Generations have celebrated, gathered, volunteered and supported one another within these walls.

Today, Wonthaggi Workers Club continues to evolve — modernising our spaces, enhancing dining and entertainment, and strengthening our role across the Bass Coast.

We look forward to welcoming you.
